Headteacher's Welcome

Mr S Diehl

Bedwas High School

My name is Mr Stephen Diehl and I’ve recently been appointed as the new Headteacher of Bedwas High School. I’m delighted and extremely proud to be given this opportunity. Although I don’t start until January, I have already visited the school on several occasions and have been impressed by the good behaviour and manners exhibited by the students, and also the warm welcome from staff.

I feel privileged indeed to be the headteacher who writes these words and I look forward to the many occasions in the weeks, months and years to come where I will be extending a welcome to pupils, parents and everybody connected to the school.

The 7th of January will be my first official day in post having taken over the position from Mr Peter Ward who retired in October after many years of great service to the school and the wider community.  I wish him a long, happy and healthy retirement and thank him for the high standards in place here in Bedwas High.  He is indeed a tough act to follow! I also would like to thank Sally Speedy for her work as interim headteacher for the last half-term, her support and hard work have been invaluable to me, as well as the staff and the pupils of this fine school.

I am extremely excited to be taking over a school, which has so much potential, with steep tradition in academic, sporting and cultural fields.  This has been exemplified by the very good results the pupils and the staff (with the support of parents, governors and the wider community) have achieved over the last two years. These pupils have done themselves, their families and their school proud and I wish them all then best for the future.

The young people in our school have got a great opportunity to make their contribution to the rich legacy of the school and to give themselves the best possible chance of the future to which they aspire.  We will all be working as hard as possible as a team to ensure that those opportunities exist and to encourage our pupils to make the most of them at all times.

My aim as headteacher of Bedwas High School is not complicated but nor is it complacent.  That aim is to provide the best possible educational experience for all of the many pupils and students who pass through our doors.  It is to ensure that they learn in a safe environment where they feel confident that their talents – no matter what they may be – are nurtured and developed and where they feel assured that their voices will be heard.  As a father of three young children, this is what I would want for them in their school and it is no different to what I want for the pupils of Bedwas High.

My ambition is that all of our pupils will leave the school in the full knowledge that they have had access to the best teaching, the strongest support and the fullest opportunities to become the best version of themselves.

I look forward to meeting and working with you all in the years ahead.

Stephen Diehl
