Modern Foreign Languages

Modern Foreign Languages at Bedwas High School is a forward thinking, dynamic department offering French at KS3, 4 and 5.

French is taught through a wide variety of methods and tasks including games, interactive ICT and competition. Following the curriculum, pupils not only learn the language but also cultural aspects of the subject too.

As a department we aim to support and challenge all those we teach while expecting the highest of standards of behaviour, effort and progress.

We offer extra-curricular activities such as a weekly French club and trips to France.

Key Stage 3 (KS3)

French is an enjoyable and interactive lesson for our pupils. Students learn through a variety of activities which aim to develop skills such as literacy and numeracy, as well as problem solving, working with others and ICT. Pupils study an array of topics and cultural elements to spark their interest in target language. The French department set very high standards and expect a lot from our pupils. In doing so, pupils progress quickly through the KS3 levels with firm foundations built for those wishing to study French at GCSE.

Key Stage 4 (KS4)

We have a good uptake at GCSE with approximately 40 pupils in Years 10 and 11 studying French. This goes against the national trend completely with languages in the majority of schools in Wales in decline.
The course builds on the skills used and enhanced at KS3, allowing pupils to feel comfortable in their learning at a high pressured time in their education. Regular assessments and vocabulary tests give pupils an insight into their progress, allowing them to track their own achievements.

Key Stage 5 (KS5)

KS5, particularly Year 12 is a fast paced course whereby pupils study an array of topics that really spark interest such as traditional and modern values, friendships / relationships, youth trends, issues and personal identity, educational and employment opportunities, regional culture and heritage in France, French-speaking countries and communities. We also study a film.

While we also cover the juicier topics in society in Year 13 such as migration and integration, cultural identity and marginalisation, cultural enrichment and celebrating and difference, discrimination and diversity, we also study one literary text. In doing so, pupils leave the course with an understanding of society, French history and current affairs.

Languages complement ALL disciplines and enhance lifelong learning. Opportunities can be found in the following sectors: Banking, Business, Communication, Diplomatic Service, Education, Engineering, Journalism, Law, Media, Management, Consulting, Public Relations, Science, Social Services, Technology, Travel and many others. Many universities now desire knowledge of a modern foreign language.
