At Bedwas High School we strive to give all pupils the opportunity to experience a wide range of sports and physical activities during their PE lessons and provide an extensive extra-curricular programme to support pupils wanting to improve their skills further. Our aim is to ensure that all pupils have a positive view of PE and sport and find at least one activity that they will continue with in later life.
Making the most of fantastic facilities such as our on-site swimming pool, strength and conditioning suite and all-weather astroturf, we organise numerous inter-house competitions and are active in local and regional school sport events and competitions. Our designated WRU School-Club Hub Officer helps promote the development of Rugby in the school and the local community and provides boys and girls with a clear pathway to develop from school players through to senior regional and international players.

Key Stage 3 (KS3)

In Years 7, 8 and 9 pupils receive 2 hours of PE lessons a week and will study activities such as Multiskills, Rugby, Football, Swimming, Gymnastics, Adventurous Activities, Athletics, Rounders and Health Related Exercise.

Key Stage 4 (KS4) & GCSE

In Years 10 and 11 pupils receive 1 hour of PE lessons a week and are given the opportunity to structure their own curriculum, selecting and opting for the activities they most enjoy and wish to explore further.

Pupils in KS4 also have the opportunity to study for a GCSE in Physical Education. Following the new WJEC specification, pupils will be assessed on both their practical ability in team and individual sports and also on their knowledge of the theoretical aspects of PE such as exercise physiology, training and exercise and the psychology of sport.

Key Stage 5 (KS5)

Students opting to return to the 6th form are given the opportunity to complete the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness). This two year programme aims to prepare our students for a career in the sports industry. Modules such as Anatomy and Physiology, Fitness Programming and Sports Coaching will give provide our students with the skills and experiences to gain work or to continue into higher education.
